Corsets on the Catwalk - Iconic Designs

Corsets are the bridge between the classic and the modern silhouette

Fashion, as we know it, relies on various classic cuts, silhouettes, and shapes used throughout history. Trends are always changing and transforming. However, some fashion pieces find their place in each fashion era.

The Iconic Corset Design

Corsets were designed in the 1500s, and since then they have been a prominent part of the fashion industry. Structured fit, highlighted waist, and iconic laces quickly became an integral part of every outfit. Although fashion has changed drastically in the last centuries corsets remained relevant. Their cut and style have changed through the ages, but they still give off the same effect.

Fashion designers have always dictated the direction in which fashion is moving. Runways are a place where we get to familiarize ourselves with the upcoming trends. Therefore, it is no wonder that high fashion finds inspiration in the designs of top fashion designers.

Alexander McQueen and the Legacy of Statement Corsets

Alexander McQueen is an iconic designer who revolutionized the fashion industry. His designs were always pushing the boundaries and he deconstructed the classic silhouettes to make them bold and fresh.

The brand continues Alexander's legacy by creating designs that inspire each season.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2013 featured corsets as the overarching element of all designs. The structured look with lines that follow the curves of the body was the dominant feature of the corsets. Wiring was used to create texture.

This catwalk perfectly showcases how feminine flowy dresses look well when paired with structured elements with harsh lines.

This portrayal of fashion elements used in history with a modern twist carried over and many other brands experimented with it.

Corset Story is a brand that specializes in creating comfortable and good-quality corsets for every occasion.

The Black Mesh Fronted Underbust corset looks amazing when it is paired with flowy dresses. It has the same style as corsets worn on the Alexander McQueen runway.

The combination of mesh and wires gives the corset a contemporary look.

Prada Uses Corsets as Statement Pieces

In the fall of 2016, Muccia Prada created showcased designs that put the corsets at the forefront of the runway. The corset was used as a practical piece that accentuated the femininity of a woman's figure. The models wore corsets on top of oversized clothes made out of menswear materials. Therefore, the corset accentuated the waist, creating a flattering hourglass figure despite the oversized clothes underneath.

On this runway, Muccia Prada also introduced the concept of pairing a corset with more casual clothing items. Making the corset an everyday staple. To further play on the relaxed style, corsets were monochromatic and loosely laced.

Pairing a corset with clothes for everyday wear is very fashionable this year. You can experiment with these kinds of outfits with corsets like Champagne Mesh Underbust Corset and Black Satin Waspie Belt.

Dolce & Gabbana and the Corsets That Cinched the Waist

Throughout the years Dolce & Gabbana has used corsets in their runway designs in various ways. The brand shaped the 90s fashion and created many trends that we see coming back today.

One of their iconic runway looks is the 1993 look that pairs a corset with a boho skirt and accessories.  This look was worn by Cindy Crawford.

What made this outfit so special is the contrasting silhouette, with the black corset on top and the voluminous patchwork skirt on the bottom. The accessories complement the design of the skirt, connecting the top and bottom.

In the Spring-Summer season of 2021 Dolce & Gabbana brought back many of these iconic outfits with a modern twist. In the fall of 2018 Dolce & Gabbana also used various corsets in their designs. Corsets were paired with various clothing items creating intricate silhouettes. From pants to dresses, corsets were used as an element that brought the pieces on the runway together.

Our Black Satin Halter Neck Corset is a great way to try out the silhouettes famously created by Dolce & Gabbana. This type of corset looks romantic with voluminous skirts and dresses. On the other hand, Vintage Styled Daisy Corset can be paired with pants, skirts, and dresses. The vintage look and flower pattern also make it the perfect choice for red outfits.

Versace and the Modern Era of Corsets

Versace has been in the spotlight in recent years, but it has inspired trends since 1978 when it was founded. In the 90s Versace created the name for itself. It became popular and dictated the fashion of the decade. Throughout the 90s, Versace heavily used corsets in their runways. The designs were sultry and innovative. Corsets accentuated the decolletage, and unlike the Dolce & Gabbana models, Versace dresses and skirts were figure-hugging or flowing silk with slits.

For the fall collection of 2022, Versace brought back their iconic corsets. Donatella Versace combined the provocative looks of the 90s with modern designs creating the collection that will surely dictate the trends of the season. The show started with a pantsuit and boned corset. A combination of silk, tight bodysuits, leather pants, and corsets made this runway stand out.

The use of bold colors like neons and reds for the corsets made this collection truly fashion-forward. Additionally, Donatella paid homage to the beginnings of the brand with the use of figure-hugging silhouettes, bold corsets, and bright colors.

The look Versace showed us on the runway is very desirable right now, however, you don't have to spend a fortune in order to wear fashion-forward looks. Corset Story offers various corsets that look amazing when styled in various ways. Red Satin Underbust Corset and the Burgundy Matt Satin Waist Taming Corset are perfect for adding a pop of color to your outfits. Red hues never go out of style, but they are especially hot this season. Pale Pink Sleeved Corset by Corset Story has the same structure as the corsets used on the Versace runway. It can be paired with jeans, skirts, or over dresses, making it extremely versatile.
